About Twinkle Patel

Twinkle is a specialist physiotherapist who visits people at home across Rutland — Oakham, Uppingham and the villages in between. Much of her work is with older adults: rebuilding strength and balance after a fall, getting moving again after a hip or knee replacement, recovering from a stroke, or simply feeling steadier and more confident around the house and garden.

She holds a Master's degree in physiotherapy specialising in community-based rehabilitation and geriatrics, alongside her physiotherapy degree, and is registered with the HCPC and a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Her NHS experience is in Leicester — the same health system that serves Rutland — including an inpatient unit with Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, where she managed her own caseload of patients with neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiac and respiratory conditions and led falls and risk assessments, and a Leicester GP practice.

Twinkle has also worked as a functional assessor for the Department for Work and Pensions, assessing people living with an unusually wide range of long-term conditions, and spent several years as a senior physiotherapist at a special school and autism centre and as a physiotherapy lecturer. That mix means very little is unfamiliar — and that she is comfortable working with complex, multiple conditions rather than one problem in isolation.

People describe Twinkle as warm, patient and easy to talk to. She takes time to explain what she is doing and why, sets goals with you rather than for you, and is happy to include family or carers so everyone knows how to help between visits. Appointments are unhurried, and she will always be honest if she thinks NHS or specialist input would suit you better. Alongside English she speaks Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi and Marathi.

Neurological rehabilitation

Neurological rehabilitation is one of Twinkle's main areas of practice. She assesses how a condition is affecting movement, tone, balance and walking, works out which of those is holding you back most, and builds the programme around it. Her treatment includes gait training, balance re-education, functional movement practice, spasticity management, stretching and strengthening, and joint mobilisation.

She has worked with people living with stroke, paralysis and paraplegia, nerve injuries, Parkinson's disease and functional neurological disorder, both in her NHS inpatient work with Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and as a functional assessor for the Department for Work and Pensions. She is a member of the Huntington's Disease Association.

Twinkle also carries out full vestibular assessments for dizziness, vertigo and unsteadiness — oculomotor testing, positional tests such as the Roll test, balance evaluation and gait analysis — and takes care to distinguish red flags and central from peripheral causes. Vestibular rehabilitation programmes cover gaze stabilisation, habituation, balance retraining and functional mobility, and she is used to delivering them safely in people's homes.

A large part of neurological work happens between visits, so she makes a point of explaining the plan to relatives, carers and other professionals involved, so that everyone is working the same way.

Children's physiotherapy

Twinkle spent around five years as a senior physiotherapist at a special school and autism centre, working with children with cerebral palsy, autism, developmental delay, spina bifida and muscular dystrophy. She assesses the child, sets a rehabilitation plan and delivers it one-to-one — muscle strengthening, managing muscle tone and functional rehabilitation aimed at the things the child actually wants to do.

She has additional training in Sensory Integration Therapy and in Postural Care & Seating (CareFlex), which is often what matters most for children with complex postural needs. She also ran dance therapy sessions for children over several summers.

Parents and carers are part of every session. Twinkle explains what she is doing and why, shows you how to carry it on at home, and is comfortable working alongside school staff and other healthcare professionals involved in your child's care.
