Post-Illness Recovery & Reconditioning
Home visits by a qualified physiotherapist
What we do
We help you rebuild strength, stamina, and confidence after illness. Whether you've been unwell with a respiratory infection, UTI, COVID-19, or any other illness that's left you feeling weak and deconditioned, we provide tailored exercise programmes to support your recovery at home.
Even minor illnesses can significantly impact your strength and exercise tolerance, especially as we age. Our physiotherapy helps you safely regain your previous level of function and independence.
Who it helps
- People recovering from COVID-19 experiencing ongoing fatigue, breathlessness, or weakness
- Those who've had respiratory infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or severe colds
- Anyone recovering from urinary tract infections (UTIs) that have caused weakness or confusion
- People who've been unwell and bedbound for a period and lost strength and mobility
- Those experiencing general deconditioning and wanting to regain their previous fitness level
What to expect
We'll assess your current strength, mobility, balance, and exercise tolerance. We'll ask about your illness, how it's affected you, and what activities you're finding difficult. Together, we'll set realistic goals for your recovery.
Your programme will include:
- Gentle strengthening exercises: Starting at your current level and gradually progressing
- Stamina building: Exercises to improve your exercise tolerance and reduce fatigue
- Balance and mobility work: Regaining confidence in movement
- Breathing exercises: For those recovering from respiratory illness
- Functional activities: Practicing everyday tasks like walking, stairs, and getting up from chairs
- Pacing advice: Managing your energy and avoiding setbacks
COVID-19 recovery support
If you're experiencing ongoing symptoms after COVID-19 (sometimes called "long COVID"), we can help. Common symptoms we support include:
- Persistent fatigue and reduced stamina
- Breathlessness during activities
- Muscle weakness and joint pain
- Difficulty with balance and coordination
- Reduced confidence in physical activities
We'll work with you to gradually rebuild your strength and function, using pacing strategies to avoid post-exertional malaise (symptom flare-ups after activity).
Evidence-based approach
Our treatment follows current best practice for post-illness rehabilitation. Research shows that graded, progressive exercise is effective for rebuilding strength and function after illness. We focus on:
- Starting at an appropriate level for your current abilities
- Gradual progression to avoid setbacks
- Monitoring symptoms and adjusting as needed
- Building both strength and cardiovascular fitness
- Supporting your return to daily activities and hobbies

Frequently asked questions
When should I start physiotherapy after being ill?
You can start as soon as you feel ready and your acute illness has passed. We'll work at a pace that's appropriate for your current recovery stage.
What if I'm still very tired?
We'll start gently and use pacing strategies. Even small amounts of appropriate activity can help with recovery. We'll monitor your symptoms and adjust accordingly.
How long does recovery take?
This varies greatly depending on the illness and your individual circumstances. Some people recover in a few weeks, while others may take several months. We'll support you throughout your recovery journey.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, you can contact us directly. However, if you have ongoing medical concerns, we recommend discussing with your GP alongside physiotherapy.
