Hip and knee replacement rehabilitation

What we do

We provide specialist post-operative physiotherapy at home for people recovering from hip or knee replacement surgery. Our programmes support your recovery with exercises designed for your stage of healing.

Recovering at home can be challenging. We bring expert guidance to you, helping you regain strength, mobility, and confidence in your new joint.

Who it helps

  • Post-hip replacement patients needing guided rehabilitation at home
  • Post-knee replacement patients working to regain range of motion and strength
  • Anyone struggling with hospital exercises who needs personalised support
  • People with limited access to outpatient physiotherapy

What to expect

We'll assess your current range of motion, strength, and walking pattern. We'll review the exercises you were given in hospital and adapt them to your home environment and progress.

Your programme will include:

  • Range of motion exercises: Gentle movements to maintain and improve joint flexibility
  • Strengthening exercises: Progressive resistance to build muscle around the new joint
  • Walking practice: Improving your gait and reducing reliance on walking aids
  • Functional tasks: Getting in and out of chairs, managing stairs, daily activities
  • Scar management: Advice on caring for your surgical wound

Timeline and progression

Recovery from joint replacement typically follows stages:

  • Weeks 0–6: Focus on gentle movement, reducing swelling, basic strengthening
  • Weeks 6–12: Progressive strengthening, improving walking distance and confidence
  • Months 3–6: Return to normal activities, building endurance

We adapt your programme to your individual progress and any specific precautions from your surgeon.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start physiotherapy after surgery?

You'll start exercises in hospital. For home physiotherapy, we can usually see you within 1–2 weeks of discharge, or whenever you feel ready for additional support.

Do I need a referral from my surgeon?

No, but please bring any discharge paperwork or exercise sheets from the hospital. If your surgeon has given specific precautions, we'll follow them.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies. Some people need support for a few weeks; others benefit from ongoing sessions over several months. We'll discuss this at your first visit.
