About Jacob Youngson

Jacob is a specialist physiotherapist who visits people at home across Shropshire — Shrewsbury, Telford, Oswestry, Bridgnorth, Ludlow and the towns and villages in between. Much of the work is neurological: rebuilding movement, balance and confidence after a stroke or a brain injury, keeping people with Parkinson's or MS as independent as possible, and picking up rehabilitation at home when hospital therapy finishes. Alongside that sits a full musculoskeletal caseload — back, neck and joint pain, sports injuries, and recovery after fractures or joint replacement surgery.

Jacob qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from the University of Wolverhampton and spent four years as a rotational physiotherapist with The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. Those rotations covered acute and hyper-acute stroke and neurology, trauma and elective orthopaedics including complex care and poly-trauma, musculoskeletal outpatients with A&E and fracture clinic work, acute medical wards, and respiratory care for both adults and children as part of the seven-day on-call service. That breadth matters at a home visit: most people are managing more than one problem at once, and Jacob is used to treating the whole picture rather than a single joint.

Since 2024 Jacob has been Head of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at Healthsec Rehab, a physiotherapy, rehabilitation and wellbeing centre near Shrewsbury, running daily clinics both on site and out in the community. The caseload there covers Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury and other neurological conditions, musculoskeletal and orthopaedic rehabilitation, and a substantial amount of work with veterans. Jacob also carries out comprehensive assessments and writes reports for case managers and litigation firms sourcing therapy for complex care clients with spinal cord and brain injuries, and designs and delivers programmed hydrotherapy sessions.

Rehabilitation technology is a genuine interest rather than a gimmick: Jacob works with clinically evidenced systems including STROLLL, LUNA, Exomotus and Neuroskin, and is a qualified Photobiomodulation practitioner. Just as much time goes into the unglamorous side — supervising and onboarding new members of the therapy team, and creating and delivering practical community sessions with Arthritis UK, Age UK, Burning Nights CRPS, Parkinson's UK, Veterans Welfare and Help for Heroes.

Before physiotherapy, Jacob trained professionally in dance at Elmhurst School for Dance in association with Birmingham Royal Ballet and at Arts Educational School, Tring. It is an unusual route into the profession, and a useful one: it brings a detailed, practised eye for how a body actually moves, and first-hand experience of what a long rehabilitation programme asks of the person doing it.

Neurological and complex rehabilitation

Neurological rehabilitation is Jacob's main area of practice. A first visit looks at how the condition is affecting movement, tone, balance, walking and transfers, works out which of those is holding you back most, and builds the programme around it — task-specific practice, gait re-education, balance retraining, strengthening and functional movement work aimed at the things you actually want to do again.

That work is grounded in NHS experience on acute and hyper-acute stroke and neurology wards, and in current practice leading neurological clinics for people living with Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis and traumatic brain injury. Jacob also assesses complex care clients with spinal cord and brain injuries on behalf of case managers and litigation firms, which means being comfortable with high-dependency needs, equipment, and coordinating with a wider multidisciplinary team.

A large part of neurological rehabilitation happens between visits, so Jacob makes a point of explaining the plan clearly to relatives, carers and any other professionals involved, so that everyone is working the same way.

Musculoskeletal, trauma and orthopaedic rehabilitation

Jacob's NHS rotations included musculoskeletal outpatients — covering A&E and fracture clinic services and, during Covid-19, a virtual assessment and triage service — alongside trauma and elective orthopaedics. That covers most of what people call the physio in for at home: back and neck pain, shoulder, hip and knee problems, sports and muscle injuries, and recovery after a fracture or a joint replacement.

Home visits suit post-operative rehabilitation particularly well. Getting in and out of your own chair, managing your own stairs and walking your own hallway are the goals that matter, and they are far easier to work on in the place where you actually do them.

Rehabilitation for veterans
