How Claire can help
Most people get in touch because someone at home has become less steady on their feet, is recovering from an operation or a spell in hospital, or is finding everyday things like stairs and getting out of a chair harder than they used to be.
Common reasons people get in touch
- Falls, or a fear of falling — unsteadiness and lost confidence moving around the house
- Coming home from hospital after an operation, a fall or an illness, and needing to build back up
- Getting weaker with age or frailty, and wanting to stay independent at home
- Long-term conditions such as Parkinson's, arthritis, stroke or multiple health problems together
- Physiotherapy for someone living with a disability, including postural management
Not sure whether it is the right fit? That is exactly what the free phone enquiry is for.
What happens when you get in touch
- A free phone call. You explain what is going on, and you get an honest answer about whether physiotherapy will help — including if the answer is that you should speak to your GP first.
- A first assessment in your own home (up to 60 minutes). A proper look at how you are moving, what you are struggling with and what you want to get back to — on your own stairs and in your own space, which tells Claire far more than a clinic room would.
- Goals set jointly with you. The plan is built around what you actually want to do again, with treatment and a small number of specific exercises explained clearly, and follow-up appointments as often or as rarely as you need them.
If she cannot answer when you call, leave a voicemail or send an email and you will get a reply as soon as possible.
About Claire Workman
Claire is an HCPC registered physiotherapist providing private home-visit physiotherapy across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan — Cardiff, Barry, Penarth, Cowbridge, Llantwit Major, Dinas Powys, Rhoose, Sully, Wenvoe and the villages in between. Appointments happen in your own home, so there is no clinic to travel to and no waiting list.
She has worked in physiotherapy for over 20 years, and qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from the University of the West of England in Bristol. Claire currently works as a community physiotherapist with the Cardiff & Vale UHB North West Community Resource Team, managing a complex caseload of adults in their own homes.
That work is the day-to-day reality of home physiotherapy: falls rehabilitation, frailty, elderly rehabilitation, getting people back on their feet after an operation or an illness, supporting early discharge from hospital and helping people avoid an admission in the first place. It also means working with people who have several health problems at once, where the plan has to account for all of them rather than treating one in isolation.
Before that, Claire spent more than eight years with Aneurin Bevan Health Board in adult learning disability and paediatric community physiotherapy, working with people of all ages living with mild to profound disabilities, alongside families, carers, schools and day centres. She has held similar posts with Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Trust and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board, covering postural management, teaching exercise programmes to clients, carers and staff, running group sessions and supervising junior staff and physiotherapy technicians. Earlier outpatient work at the Parks Therapy Centre in Cambridgeshire covered assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal pain.
Claire's approach is to set goals jointly with you and build the programme around promoting activity and independence — your own home, your own stairs, and the tasks that actually matter to you. She is based in Llandaff North in Cardiff and covers South Glamorgan for home visits.

Falls, balance and staying independent
A fall, or a few near-misses, often changes how someone moves around their own home long before it changes anything medically. People start avoiding the stairs, stop going out, and get weaker as a result — which makes the next fall more likely rather than less.
Claire assesses balance, strength, walking and the home environment itself, then works on the specific things that are causing the difficulty. That means practising real tasks — getting out of your own chair, managing your own stairs, getting to the bathroom at night — alongside a strength and balance programme, and practical advice on hazards and any equipment that would make things easier.
Recovery after hospital, surgery or illness
Rehabilitation after a joint replacement, a fracture, a stroke or a period of illness, carried out at home. Community rehabilitation is Claire's day job, including supporting people who have come out of hospital early and still have a lot of ground to make up.
The goals that matter here are the everyday ones, and they are far easier to work on in the place where you actually do them. Progress is reviewed as you go, and the programme is adjusted rather than handed over once and left.
Long-term conditions and disability
Claire has spent much of her career working with people living with long-term conditions and with disabilities, from mild to profound, across all ages. That includes postural management, maintaining movement and comfort, and setting realistic maintenance programmes rather than short courses that stop abruptly.
She is used to working alongside families and carers, and to explaining a programme so that the people around you can support it between visits.
