Two operations, two different recoveries

Hip and knee replacements are two of the most successful operations there are, but they recover quite differently. A hip is usually about rebuilding the muscles at the side of the hip and losing the limp. A knee is about swelling, stiffness and getting the joint to bend and straighten. There is a dedicated guide for each:

After a hip replacement

Recovery week by week, hip precautions, the limp that hangs on, and exercises. Physio after a hip replacement in Sheffield.

After a knee replacement

Getting the knee straight and bending, swelling, the six-week plateau, and exercises. Physio after a knee replacement in Sheffield.

What both have in common

  • Early work at home matters. The first six weeks set the pattern for the months after.
  • Pain relief should be timed. Taking prescribed painkillers so they are working when you exercise makes a big difference.
  • Walking aids are temporary. Coming off them in stages, when you are steady and not limping, avoids setbacks.
  • Stairs have a method. Up with the good leg, down with the operated leg, until you are strong enough to go step over step.
  • Driving waits for clearance. Usually around six weeks, once your surgeon and insurer are happy.

Call 999 for chest pain or sudden breathlessness after surgery. A painful, swollen calf, or a wound that is hot, red or leaking, needs your GP, NHS 111 or the ward that discharged you the same day.

Before your operation

If you are on the waiting list, strengthening beforehand (prehab) can make the first weeks after surgery easier. It is also the right time to practise with crutches, and to work out how your bedroom, bathroom and stairs will work while you recover.

NHS or private

Whether your operation is at the Northern General or privately at Claremont or Thornbury, home physiotherapy can be used on its own or alongside whatever physiotherapy the hospital provides. Hamoodi works within your surgeon's protocol either way.

Frequently asked questions

When should home physiotherapy start after a joint replacement?

As soon as you are home, as long as it fits with your surgical team's advice. The first weeks are where the most important work happens.

Is recovery harder after a knee than a hip?

Usually, yes. Knees tend to be more swollen and stiff, and need more work to get them bending, while hips often recover more quickly.

Can you help before surgery?

Yes. Strengthening before an operation can make recovery easier.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies. You get an honest estimate at the first visit and are never tied into a block of sessions.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly, starting with a free phone call.

Do you cover all of Sheffield?

Yes. Every appointment is a home visit across the city and its suburbs.
