Post-Operative Rehabilitation at home in Northampton
The hospital's job ends when you are safe to go home. Getting properly better is a separate piece of work, and it is the piece that most often gets left to chance. People in Northampton usually call in the first few weeks after an operation, when the discharge exercise sheet has run out of useful things to say, or later, when they have healed but have never quite got their walking, their confidence or their strength back.
Vidhi is trained in the rehabilitation protocols that follow trauma and joint replacement surgery, and spent time in NHS intermediate care, the service whose whole purpose is getting people home from hospital and back to independence. Rehabilitation at home means the work happens on the stairs, bed and chair you actually have to manage, not a version of them in a gym.
Surgery we help people recover from
Hip and knee replacement
The most common operation we see, with its own detailed page for Northampton, linked below. Swelling, walking pattern, stairs and getting the last of the strength back.
Fracture surgery after a fall
Hip, wrist, shoulder and ankle fractures that have been plated or pinned. The bone is fixed; the walking, balance and confidence still need rebuilding.
Shoulder surgery
Rotator cuff repairs, shoulder replacement and fracture fixation, where the protected early weeks and the graded return of movement have to be managed carefully in the right order.
Spinal surgery
Decompression, discectomy and fusion. Rebuilding tolerance for sitting, walking and bending within the surgeon's guidance.
Abdominal, cardiac and general surgery
Any longer hospital stay leaves people deconditioned: weaker legs, less stamina, less confidence on their feet. This is rehabilitation for the person, not the scar.
Recovery that has stalled
Weeks or months on, healed but not back to normal. It is rarely too late to make a difference, and this is a large part of what Vidhi does.
What the first visit involves
- A conversation about the operation, what the surgeon and ward said, and any restrictions you have been given, which Vidhi works within
- Assessment of the operated area and of how you are actually moving: getting up, walking, turning, stairs, and getting in and out of bed
- A check of swelling, the wound area and your balance, and a straight word if anything needs the surgical team to look at it
- A short programme set at the level you can manage now, progressed as you heal
- Practical fixes for the things that are hard this week: the bed height, the chair, the stairs, the bathroom
Treatment and how long it takes
Early on the work is about protecting the repair while keeping everything else moving: swelling control, gentle range of movement, walking pattern and safe transfers. As healing allows, it becomes strengthening and stamina, then the specific things you want back, whether that is walking to the shops, the garden, driving or getting down to play with grandchildren.
Most people are seen weekly at first, when things change quickly, and then less often. A straightforward joint replacement usually needs six to twelve weeks of input; fracture recovery in older adults and recovery after a long hospital stay often take longer, and Vidhi will be honest about which you are looking at.
Had a hip or knee replaced?
That is common enough that it has its own page. The hip and knee replacement rehab page for Northampton goes into the week-by-week detail: swelling, walking pattern, stairs, driving and returning to the things you had stopped doing. This page covers everything else, and the two are the same service.
Home visits across Northampton
Vidhi visits homes right across Northampton, including Kingsthorpe, Duston, Abington, Weston Favell, Far Cotton, Hardingstone, Wootton, Moulton and the town centre. If you have been treated at Northampton General Hospital, or you are waiting on a fracture clinic, orthopaedic or neurology appointment, Vidhi works alongside that care rather than instead of it, and will say plainly if she thinks you need a medical review first.
Frequently asked questions
When should physiotherapy start after an operation?
As soon as you are home, in most cases. The first two weeks are when swelling, stiffness and bad habits set in, and when a small amount of guidance makes the largest difference. If you are already weeks or months on, it is still worth starting; recovery that has stalled usually responds well.
Will you work with what the hospital told me?
Yes. Vidhi works within the surgeon's restrictions and alongside any NHS physiotherapy you are already getting, rather than instead of it. If the NHS follow-up has finished or the wait is long, home visits fill that gap.
Can you help before an operation as well?
Yes. Going into surgery stronger, with the practical things at home already sorted, consistently makes the first weeks afterwards easier. If you are on a waiting list, that time is worth using.
I had a fall and a fracture. Is this the right service?
Yes. Rehabilitation after a hip, wrist or shoulder fracture is mostly about walking, balance, confidence and getting strength back, and it carries on well after the hospital has discharged you. Vidhi also runs falls prevention alongside it, because one fall often predicts another unless the cause is dealt with.
How much does it cost?
The phone enquiry is free. Current visit rates are on Vidhi's prices page, and she will confirm the cost before anything is booked so there are no surprises.
I was operated on at Northampton General. Can you take over from there?
Yes. Vidhi picks up where the ward and any outpatient physiotherapy leave off, and every appointment is a home visit across Northampton and the surrounding villages.
