Physiotherapy After Knee or Hip Surgery in Liverpool
Home physiotherapy across Liverpool after a knee or hip replacement, ACL reconstruction, keyhole knee surgery or a hip fracture.
Physiotherapy at home after knee or hip surgery
The weeks after an operation are when the hard work of recovery happens. Getting the joint moving, building strength back and walking normally again all depend on the exercises you do once you are home. Having a physiotherapist come to you means no travelling while you are sore and on crutches, and the rehab is planned around your own stairs, chairs, bed and bathroom.
Naveen works with people after knee and hip operations whether they had surgery at the Royal Liverpool, Aintree, Broadgreen or Whiston, or privately. He follows your surgeon's instructions and works within any limits they have set.
Operations Naveen helps people recover from
Knee replacement
Getting the knee straight and bending, managing swelling, and walking and climbing stairs normally again.
Hip replacement
Walking without a limp, getting off crutches, and getting in and out of chairs, beds and the car with confidence.
Knee ligament (ACL) reconstruction
A long, staged rehab, from the first weeks after surgery through to running, turning and sport.
Knee arthroscopy and meniscus surgery
Getting movement and strength back after keyhole surgery on the knee.
Surgery after a hip fracture
Rebuilding strength, balance and confidence after a broken hip, which often comes with a fall.
Before surgery
Strengthening and advice in the weeks before an operation can make the recovery afterwards easier.
What recovery usually looks like
- First weeks: managing pain and swelling, getting the joint moving, and walking safely with the right aid.
- Weeks two to six: building strength, walking further, and managing stairs and everyday tasks.
- Six weeks onwards: losing the limp, coming off walking aids, and getting back to driving, work and longer walks, as your surgeon allows.
- Longer term: strength and confidence for the things you want to do, which for ligament surgery can mean a return to sport.
After surgery, get urgent medical help for chest pain or sudden breathlessness (call 999). Contact your GP, NHS 111 or the ward that discharged you straight away for a painful, swollen calf, a wound that is hot, red or leaking, or a fever. Naveen checks for these at every visit, but they should never wait for one.
What the first visit involves
- Your operation and instructions: what was done, and any limits your surgeon or the hospital team have given you.
- Assessment: movement, strength, swelling and how you are walking.
- Your home: stairs, chairs, bed and bathroom, so you can manage them safely.
- Treatment on the day and a clear plan for the next few weeks.
- Exercises set at the right level for where you are, and built up as you recover.

Frequently asked questions
When should physio start after my operation?
Usually within the first week or two of getting home, depending on the operation and what your surgeon has advised. Starting early helps with stiffness and swelling.
I already have some NHS physio. Can I have more?
Yes. Many people want more frequent sessions, or more help once their NHS sessions have finished. Naveen will fit in with any plan the hospital has given you.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the operation and how you are getting on. After a joint replacement, many people have a short course over the first two to three months. Ligament reconstruction takes longer. Naveen will give you an idea after the first visit.
Can I have physio before my operation?
Yes. Building strength and practising things like using crutches before surgery can make the first weeks afterwards easier.
Can I have an evening or weekend appointment?
Yes, depending on availability. Naveen offers evening visits and weekend visits, including Saturdays and Sundays, which suits people who work or look after family during the day.
Do you visit anywhere in Liverpool?
Yes. Every appointment is a home visit across Liverpool and the rest of Merseyside. Depending on where you live, a travel charge may apply. Naveen always confirms it before your appointment is booked.
