Sports injury physio from someone who has worked in professional football

Most sports injuries get better, but how you rehab them decides whether they stay better. Go back too soon and the same hamstring or ankle tends to go again. Rest for too long and you lose the strength that protects it. The aim is to get you back to what you play, at the level you play it, with less chance of it happening again.

Naveen has elite sports physiotherapy experience with professional footballers and athletes in the UAE and Oman, and he uses the same approach with people who play Sunday league, run at weekends or train in the gym. Treatment is at your home, so there is no sitting in traffic with a sore knee, and evening and weekend visits fit around work and training.

Injuries Naveen treats

Muscle strains

Hamstring, calf, groin and thigh strains. Graded loading gets the muscle strong again rather than just letting the pain settle.

Ankle sprains

The most common sports injury. Balance and strength work matters as much as the swelling, because a weak ankle tends to go again.

Knee injuries

Ligament sprains, cartilage and meniscus problems, and pain at the front of the knee in runners and footballers.

Tendon problems

Achilles, patellar and hamstring tendon pain. Tendons respond to the right kind of load, built up over weeks.

Shoulder injuries

From the gym, racket sports, swimming or a fall on the pitch, including rotator cuff problems and a shoulder that feels unstable.

Back and hip pain in sport

Pain that comes on with running, lifting or kicking, and the hip and groin problems common in football.

Getting back to sport safely

  • Early days: settle the pain and swelling, and keep moving what you can without making it worse.
  • Rebuilding: strength, control and range, built up in stages so the injured area can take more load each week.
  • Sport-specific work: running, turning, jumping, kicking or lifting, depending on what you do.
  • Return-to-sport tests: the decision to go back is based on what you can actually do, not just on how many weeks it has been.
  • Staying injury-free: a plan to keep doing once you are back, because the best predictor of an injury is a previous one.

Get urgent medical help for an injury where you cannot put any weight on the leg, the joint looks out of shape, there is severe swelling straight away, or you have numbness, a cold limb or a head injury.

What the first visit involves

  • A proper history: what happened, what you play and what you want to get back to, and by when.
  • Assessment: the injured area, plus the strength and movement around it, because the cause is not always where it hurts.
  • A clear diagnosis: what is most likely injured and how long it usually takes, in plain terms.
  • Treatment on the day, including hands-on work where it helps.
  • A rehab plan with clear stages and targets, so you know what to do between visits and when you are ready for the next step.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a scan for my injury?

Usually not. Most sports injuries are diagnosed from what happened and a proper examination. Naveen will tell you if he thinks a scan or a specialist opinion would change the plan, and why.

How soon can I go back to playing?

It depends on the injury and the sport. A mild ankle sprain can take a couple of weeks, while a bad muscle tear or a ligament injury can take months. Naveen uses strength and movement tests to judge when you are ready, rather than a fixed date.

Is it physio for professionals only?

No. Most people Naveen sees play for fun, run, or go to the gym. The approach is the same, just matched to what you want to get back to.

Can you treat a sports injury at home?

Yes. Assessment, hands-on treatment and the rehab exercises themselves need very little equipment, and Naveen brings what is needed. Later stages often use a local park or your own gym.

Can I have an evening or weekend appointment?

Yes, depending on availability. Naveen offers evening visits and weekend visits, including Saturdays and Sundays, which suits people who work or look after family during the day.

Do you visit anywhere in Liverpool?

Yes. Every appointment is a home visit across Liverpool and the rest of Merseyside. Depending on where you live, a travel charge may apply. Naveen always confirms it before your appointment is booked.
