How Paul can help
Most people get in touch about a muscle or joint injury that is stopping them training, playing or running — or one that keeps coming back every time they return to it. Paul's work is getting you back to the thing you actually want to do, not just out of pain.
Common reasons people get in touch
- Hamstring, calf, quad or groin injuries — including ones that keep recurring
- Running injuries such as Achilles pain, shin pain and knee pain
- Knee and ankle injuries, including ligament sprains and post-surgical recovery
- Back, neck and shoulder pain that is limiting training or everyday activity
- Returning to sport after an injury, an operation or a long time out
Not sure whether it is the right fit? Send a short enquiry describing the problem and you will get an honest answer.
What happens when you get in touch
- A free enquiry. You describe what happened and what you are trying to get back to, and you get an honest answer about whether physiotherapy will help — including if the answer is that you need a scan or a GP first.
- A first assessment in your own home (up to 60 minutes). A proper look at the injury, how you are moving and what is loading the tissue — plus what you are actually aiming to return to, because that shapes the whole plan.
- A progressive rehabilitation plan. Hands-on treatment and acupuncture where they help, plus a specific, staged exercise programme with clear criteria for moving up a level and returning to sport.
Paul will reply as soon as he can — he combines this work with a full-time role in professional football.
About Paul Billington
Paul is an HCPC registered physiotherapist providing private home-visit physiotherapy across Formby and the surrounding Sefton villages — Freshfield, Ainsdale, Hightown, Little Altcar, Great Altcar, Ince Blundell, Thornton and Lydiate. Appointments happen in your own home, so there is no clinic to travel to and no waiting list.
He has over 16 years of experience in elite sport. Paul is currently Academy Physiotherapist at Liverpool Football Club, rehabilitating academy players across the age groups and developing the return-to-training procedures that get them safely back on the pitch. Alongside that he is Lecturer in Physiotherapy and Sports Rehabilitation at Liverpool Hope University, and Programme Lead for the MSc in Sports Medicine.
Before Liverpool, Paul was Head of Academy Sports Science and Medicine at Wigan Athletic, running the medical care for the Under 21 and Under 18 squads and working directly with orthopaedic surgeons, specialist radiographers and international medical teams around players' surgery and rehabilitation. Earlier he was 1st Team Physiotherapist and Head of Academy at Warrington Wolves, providing pitch-side assessment and hands-on treatment in professional rugby league.
That elite-sport background sits on top of broad clinical foundations. Paul spent three years as a rotational physiotherapist with Warrington and Halton NHS Foundation Trust, covering musculoskeletal, orthopaedics, respiratory and intensive care rehabilitation, and running spinal and knee rehabilitation classes. He has also worked in private sports rehabilitation clinics, returning members of the public to their chosen activity.
Paul holds an MSc in Sports Injury and Rehabilitation from the University of Salford and a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from Manchester Metropolitan University. His postgraduate research used EMG to examine lower limb muscle activation, work that directly informs how he selects rehabilitation exercises, and hamstring injury is his particular clinical interest. He is a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists and uses acupuncture as part of treatment where appropriate.

Sports injuries and muscle injury
This is the core of Paul's work: hamstring, calf, quadriceps and groin injuries, ligament sprains, and the overload injuries that build up across a season. The starting point is a full assessment to establish exactly which tissue is involved, how badly, and what caused it — because a hamstring that tears again is usually one that was returned to sport too early or without the strength it needed.
Rehabilitation is staged, with clear criteria for progressing rather than a fixed number of weeks. That is the same framework used in professional football, applied to whatever level you play at.
Running injuries
Achilles pain, shin pain, knee pain and the other complaints that come from training load rising faster than the tissue can adapt. Treatment addresses the injured tissue, but the plan also covers how you are loading it — training volume, footwear, surfaces and the strength work that makes the tissue tolerant.
The aim is to keep you running where that is safe, rather than stopping completely and losing the fitness you have built.
Return to sport and post-operative rehabilitation
Rehabilitation after a repair, a reconstruction or a significant injury, carried out at home. Getting back to full training is a series of measurable steps, and the most common reason people re-injure is skipping one of them.
Paul builds the same progression he uses with academy players: restoring range and control first, then strength, then speed and change of direction, with clear markers at each stage before returning to competition.
