Describing pain is harder than it sounds. Is it sharp or dull, burning or aching, constant or triggered by movement? In a second language, that precision is difficult — and it directly affects the quality of your diagnosis.

Why language matters more in physiotherapy than people assume

A physiotherapy assessment is largely a conversation. The physical examination narrows things down, but the history does most of the diagnostic work: when the pain started, what provokes it, what eases it, how it behaves over 24 hours, what it stops you doing.

When that conversation happens in a language you are not fully comfortable in, detail gets lost. People simplify — “it just hurts” — because the precise words are hard to reach. Nuances that would change the diagnosis go unmentioned. And the explanation coming back is harder to absorb, which matters because understanding your condition is itself part of the treatment, particularly for long-standing pain.

Physiotherapy in your own language

Brian Cervera is a native Spanish and Catalan speaker, and an HCPC registered Senior Physiotherapist trained in the UK. Assessment, treatment, explanation and your home exercise programme can all be delivered in Spanish or Catalan — or in English, or a mix, whichever suits you.

That means you can describe the problem the way you would naturally, ask questions without rehearsing them first, and understand the plan properly rather than approximately.

Who this tends to help

  • Spanish and Catalan speakers living and working in north-east Wales
  • Older family members who are less confident in English, particularly where an adult child would otherwise have to interpret
  • Anyone managing a complex or long-standing problem, where the explanation matters as much as the treatment
  • People who have found previous appointments rushed or hard to follow

Using a family member as an interpreter is common and well intentioned, but it has real drawbacks — particularly around embarrassing symptoms, and where the relative summarises rather than translates. Being seen directly in your own language avoids both.

The same service, in another language

This is not a reduced or separate service. It is the full assessment and treatment — musculoskeletal and orthopaedic rehabilitation, spinal manipulation and mobilisation, sports injuries, post-operative recovery, persistent pain and neurological rehabilitation — delivered in the language you prefer.

Written material can be provided in Spanish or Catalan too, so your home exercise programme is something you can follow without translating it first.
