Hip Replacement Recovery at Home in Leeds: Week-by-Week Rehab

If you're reading this, you've either just had a hip replacement in Leeds or you're about to. First, the good news: it's one of the most successful operations in modern medicine. Most patients do well. The quality of your rehab in the first 12 weeks, however, makes a real difference to how quickly you get back to walking Roundhay Park, gardening in Horsforth, or getting back behind the wheel.
This article is general guidance. Always follow the specific advice of your surgeon at LGI, Chapel Allerton, Nuffield Leeds or Spire Leeds.
The two main approaches
- Posterior approach — most common in the UK. Typically carries hip precautions in the first 6–12 weeks (no deep hip flexion, no crossing legs, no combined flexion and internal rotation).
- Anterior or lateral approach — often fewer precautions, but always confirm with your surgical team.
Week-by-week recovery
Week 1 — home and settled
- Walking with crutches or frame, following weight-bearing instructions.
- Simple circulation and hip exercises every 1–2 hours.
- Sleep on your back if advised.
- Use a high chair, raised toilet seat, and stairs one step at a time (good leg up, operated leg down with the bannister).
Week 2–4
- Progress walking distance — short, frequent walks around your Leeds neighbourhood.
- Begin gentle strengthening — glute activation, mini-squats, standing hip work.
- Outpatient check at 2–3 weeks in many Leeds pathways.
Week 4–6
- Off one crutch, then both, when safe.
- Build hip abduction and glute strength.
- Driving usually resumed around 6 weeks with surgeon clearance.
Week 6–12
- Return to many daily activities — golf, gentle cycling, light gardening.
- Progressive strengthening and balance.
- Stair confidence, outdoor walking, return to work (for non-manual roles).
Month 3+
- Continue strength and conditioning.
- Gradual return to higher-impact activities (check with your surgeon first).
Leeds-specific considerations
- Period homes in Headingley, Chapel Allerton and Roundhay often have steep stairs and awkward first-floor bathrooms — I set you up with practical advice for your actual stairs.
- Hilly suburbs (Meanwood Valley, Otley Chevin) need graded return-to-walking planning.
- Parking at LGI / Nuffield / Spire is a genuine stressor — one reason home physio is so useful in the first 6 weeks.
