Post-Surgery Physiotherapy at Home in Leeds (LGI, St James's, Nuffield & Spire)
Published
Local Physiotherapist — Parth Chauhan, Leeds
Leeds has some of the best orthopaedic and surgical care in the country — from Leeds Teaching Hospitals at LGI and St James's, to Nuffield Health Leeds and Spire Leeds on the private side. But surgery is only step one. The rehab that happens after you get home is where long-term recovery is won or lost. Home physiotherapy lets you pick up your rehab from day one, without battling parking at Clarendon Wing or Gledhow Wing.
This article is general guidance and is not a substitute for the specific advice of your surgical team. Always follow the protocol provided at discharge.
Where I pick up Leeds surgical rehab
- Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) — trauma, orthopaedics, neurosurgery.
- St James's University Hospital ("Jimmy's") — orthopaedics, general surgery.
- Chapel Allerton Hospital — specialist orthopaedic and rheumatology unit.
- Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital (Kirkstall Lane).
- Spire Leeds Hospital (Roundhay).
- Yorkshire Clinic (Bingley) and BMI The Duchy (Harrogate) for residents travelling out of Leeds.
Surgeries I commonly pick up post-discharge
- Total hip replacement (THR)
- Total knee replacement (TKR)
- Knee arthroscopy (meniscal repair, ACL reconstruction)
- Shoulder surgery (rotator cuff repair, subacromial decompression, stabilisation, shoulder replacement)
- Spinal surgery (microdiscectomy, decompression)
- Foot and ankle surgery (bunion, Achilles repair, ankle reconstruction)
- Hand and wrist surgery
- Fracture post-fixation rehab
Why home rehab after Leeds surgery just works
- No driving needed. Most major operations mean no driving for weeks.
- Your real environment. Your stairs, your bed, your toilet, your shower.
- Flexible slots. Morning, afternoon, early evening.
- Coordinated with your surgeon. I follow the protocol set by your consultant.
A typical first six weeks
- Day 1 home visit: safety review — stairs, bed, chair, toilet, walking aids, pain plan.
- Week 1–2: activation, range of motion, swelling management, gait re-education with aids.
- Week 2–4: progression of range, walking tolerance, early strength.
- Week 4–6: strength, confidence, stair practice, functional tasks.
- Week 6+: sport- or task-specific return (walking Roundhay, parkrun, golf, gardening, work).
When to raise a concern
I always flag up red flags to your surgical team: new calf swelling or pain, new wound changes, uncontrolled pain, new numbness or weakness.
Leeds areas I cover
All of Leeds, including Headingley, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Horsforth, Meanwood, Kirkstall, Pudsey, Morley, Garforth, and the city centre. Also wider West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire.
