Recovering after a fracture or injury takes more than waiting for a bone to heal. Home physiotherapy helps you rebuild movement, strength and confidence safely — especially in the weeks after a cast, splint or sling comes off.

Rehabilitation after a fracture

Once a fracture has been treated — whether it was managed in a cast, a splint, or with surgery — the joint and muscles around it are often stiff, weak and painful to use. Structured physiotherapy helps you restore movement, regain strength, and get back to normal activities without setbacks. This is rehabilitation for adults aged 18 and over.

Common injuries we support

  • Wrist fractures (including Colles' fractures): Restoring wrist and hand movement, grip strength, and everyday function after the cast is removed.
  • Ankle and foot fractures: Regaining movement, balance and safe walking, guided by your weight-bearing instructions.
  • Hip fractures after a fall: Rebuilding walking, strength and confidence — often alongside falls prevention work.
  • Shoulder and upper-arm fractures: Graded movement and staged strengthening once your consultant is happy.
  • Other trauma: Rehabilitation after sporting injuries, road traffic accidents, and post-surgical fixation.

How trauma rehab differs from planned surgery recovery

Unlike a planned (elective) hip or knee replacement, an injury is unexpected — there is no chance to prepare beforehand, and you may be dealing with pain, reduced independence and a knock to your confidence all at once. Home physiotherapy is well suited to this: it starts where you are, works around your other injuries, and helps you regain independence with daily tasks in the place you actually need to do them.

What your rehabilitation may include

  • Range-of-movement work to reduce stiffness in the affected joint
  • Progressive strengthening as healing allows
  • Walking practice and balance retraining, with or without aids
  • Advice on stairs, transfers and managing at home safely
  • Pain, swelling and pacing guidance
  • A staged plan that respects your consultant's weight-bearing and precaution instructions
