Falls Prevention for Care Home Residents in Lancashire
Published
Local Physiotherapist — Jill Wilson, Lancashire
Falls are one of the biggest risks to health, confidence and independence for care home residents. The good news is that many falls can be prevented — and physiotherapy is one of the most effective ways to do it.
Why care home residents fall
Falls usually have more than one cause — reduced leg strength, poor balance, slower reactions, certain medications, eyesight changes, and hazards in the environment can all play a part. Many residents also move less than they used to, which weakens muscles and makes falls more likely.
How physiotherapy reduces falls
Jill assesses each resident's strength, balance, walking and confidence, then puts together a practical plan. This usually includes:
- Gentle, progressive strength exercises — especially for the legs
- Balance and standing practice, built up safely over time
- Walking practice and safe use of any walking aids
- Confidence-building for residents who have had a fall or are afraid of falling
- Advice for staff on safe transfers and supporting residents to keep moving
Confidence is part of the picture
A fall, or the fear of falling, often makes people do less — which weakens muscles further and increases the risk of another fall. Rebuilding confidence is a key part of keeping residents safe, active and independent.
