Falls are not an inevitable part of getting older. With the right balance and strength work, home safety advice, and confidence-building, many falls can be prevented — and home physiotherapy is one of the most practical ways to do it.
Why falls happen
Falls usually have more than one cause. Reduced leg strength, poor balance, slower reactions, eyesight changes, certain medications, and hazards around the home can all play a part. The good news is that several of these are treatable, and a home assessment is the ideal place to start because it looks at the real environment where falls tend to happen.
What a falls and balance assessment involves
At a home visit, Jill assesses strength, balance, walking, and how you manage everyday tasks such as getting out of a chair or using the stairs. She also reviews the home environment — rugs, lighting, thresholds, bathroom access, and where you might need rails or aids.
Exercises that reduce falls
Evidence shows that progressive strength and balance exercise is one of the most effective ways to reduce falls. A typical home programme might include:
- Sit-to-stand practice to build leg strength
- Standing balance work, progressed safely over time
- Stepping and weight-transfer practice
- Walking practice indoors and, where appropriate, outdoors
- Advice on walking aids and how to use them correctly
Confidence matters too
A fall — or the fear of falling — can make people do less, which weakens muscles and makes another fall more likely. Rebuilding confidence is a key part of rehabilitation, and working at home means practising in the exact places that feel daunting.
