Children's Respiratory Physiotherapy at Home in Derbyshire and Staffordshire

Respiratory physiotherapy helps with clearing the chest, breathing more comfortably and reducing the impact of repeated chest infections. It is not only for adults with long-term lung conditions: children with complex or neurological needs often benefit just as much.
Who it helps
Respiratory physiotherapy at home can support:
- Children with complex or neurological conditions who need help managing secretions
- People with neuromuscular conditions where the cough is weak or ineffective
- Adults with long-term lung conditions such as COPD or bronchiectasis
- Recovery after a chest infection or pneumonia
- Older adults with recurrent chest problems, where the aim is to reduce infection risk
What treatment involves
Assessment comes first: breathing pattern, chest sounds, how effective the cough is, and what is realistic day to day. Treatment may then include:
- Manual techniques such as percussion and vibrations to help loosen and move secretions
- Breathing and airway clearance techniques tailored to the person and their ability to take part
- Machine-assisted clearance, including cough assist to support a weak or ineffective cough, and suction where it is clinically indicated
- Positioning advice, since how someone is positioned has a direct effect on how well the chest clears
- Education for families and carers, so that techniques can be carried out confidently between visits
Why it is worth doing at home
Chest care works best when it fits into the everyday routine. Doing it at home means techniques can be practised in the actual bed, chair or position the person uses, and families and carers can be shown directly rather than asked to translate advice from a clinic.
The link with positioning
Respiratory care and postural management often go together. Posture affects how easily the chest expands and how well secretions clear, so where someone has both respiratory and postural needs, it makes sense to look at the two together rather than separately.
