Physiotherapy in Care and Nursing Homes in Hampshire
Published
Local Physiotherapist — Rits Rana, Hampshire
When someone moves into a care or nursing home, it is easy for them to start moving less. They walk less, sit more and slowly lose strength and confidence. A physiotherapist who visits the home can help them stay as mobile, comfortable and independent as possible, and show staff how to help between visits.
What physiotherapy can help with
- Walking and getting about – keeping someone on their feet for as long as possible
- Falls – finding out why they happen and reducing the risk
- Standing up and sitting down, and moving between bed, chair and toilet
- Recovery after a hospital stay, a fall or an operation
- Stiff joints and comfort for people who spend most of the day in a chair or in bed
- Good positions in the chair and bed, to ease pain and protect the skin
- Stroke, Parkinson's and other neurological conditions
- The right walking aid, set to the right height
Help for the staff too
A physiotherapist is there for an hour or so. Care staff are there every day. One of the most useful parts of a visit is showing staff simple ways to help: how to support someone to stand, which exercises to encourage, and how to keep them moving safely. That way the good work carries on between visits.
What happens at the first visit
Rits starts by talking to the resident, and to staff and family if they wish. She looks at how they move, what they can do now and what they want to be able to do. Then she agrees a plan with them, usually a few simple exercises and practical changes, and puts it in writing for the staff.
People living with dementia
People with dementia can still benefit a great deal from physiotherapy. Visits are kept calm and simple, at a pace that suits the person, and often built around everyday things they enjoy, such as walking to the garden or the dining room.
How to arrange it
- Talk to the care home manager first, so they know a physiotherapist will be visiting.
- Call Rits for a free chat about your relative and what you hope physiotherapy will help with.
- Rits will agree a time with the home, and keep you and the staff updated.
Through her practice, Mobile Rehab, Rits is recognised by Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Vitality and WPA, so if your relative has health insurance, check whether their policy covers physiotherapy.
