General Strengthening Programmes
Home visits by a qualified physiotherapist

What we do
We provide personalised strengthening programmes in your home. Whether you're looking to build general fitness, recover from deconditioning, or maintain independence, we create exercise plans tailored to your goals and abilities.
Strength training isn't just for athletes. It's essential for maintaining mobility, preventing falls, and staying independent as we age.
Who it helps
- Older adults who want to maintain or improve their strength
- People recovering from illness who have lost muscle mass
- Anyone feeling weaker and wanting to build confidence
- Those preparing for surgery who want to be as strong as possible beforehand
What to expect
We'll assess your current strength, movement patterns, and fitness level. We'll discuss your goals and create a progressive programme that challenges you safely.
Your programme will include:
- Functional exercises: Movements that help with daily activities (sit-to-stand, step-ups, carrying)
- Progressive resistance: Gradually increasing difficulty as you get stronger
- Core strengthening: Building stability and posture
- Balance work: Improving stability alongside strength
- Endurance training: Building stamina for longer activities
Equipment and progression
Most exercises can be done with minimal equipment — your own body weight, a sturdy chair, and household items. As you progress, we may recommend resistance bands or light weights.
We'll progress your programme gradually, ensuring you're always challenged but never overwhelmed. You'll practice exercises between visits, and we'll adjust them based on your progress.

Frequently asked questions
Am I too old to start strength training?
No. Research shows that people in their 70s, 80s, and beyond can build strength with appropriate exercise. We'll work at your level and progress safely.
How often should I exercise?
We typically recommend 2–3 sessions per week for strength training. We'll give you a home programme to follow between our visits.
How long until I see results?
Most people notice improvements in strength and confidence within 4–6 weeks of consistent exercise. Functional improvements (like getting up from a chair more easily) often come sooner.
