Steps and stairs practice

What we do

We provide specialist practice on steps and stairs to improve your technique, build strength, and increase confidence. Whether you're recovering from surgery, managing a long-term condition, or simply finding stairs more difficult, we can help.

Stairs are one of the most challenging tasks for many people. With the right technique and practice, you can manage them more safely and confidently.

Who it helps

  • People who avoid stairs due to fear or difficulty
  • Those recovering from hip or knee surgery who need to rebuild stair confidence
  • Anyone with reduced leg strength struggling with steps
  • People who have fallen on stairs and lost confidence

What to expect

We'll assess your current ability on stairs — your technique, strength, balance, and confidence. We'll practice on your own stairs (if you have them) or use a single step to build up your skills.

Your programme will include:

  • Technique training: Safe methods for going up and down stairs
  • Strengthening exercises: Building leg strength for stair climbing
  • Step practice: Starting with a single step and progressing to full flights
  • Handrail use: How to use handrails effectively
  • Walking aid technique: If you use a stick or frame on stairs

Safe stair technique

We'll teach you the safest methods for managing stairs:

  • Going up: "Good leg first" — lead with your stronger leg
  • Going down: "Bad leg first" — lead with your weaker leg
  • One step at a time: Bringing both feet to each step if needed
  • Using handrails: Always use the rail for support
  • Taking your time: There's no rush — safety first

Building strength and confidence

Stair climbing requires good leg strength. We'll give you exercises to build the muscles you need:

  • Sit-to-stand practice
  • Step-ups on a low step
  • Heel raises for calf strength
  • Knee strengthening exercises

As your strength improves, stairs will feel easier and safer.

Frequently asked questions

What if I don't have stairs at home?

We can practice on a single step (like a doorstep) or work on strengthening exercises to prepare you for stairs elsewhere. We can also accompany you to practice on outdoor steps.

Is it safe to practice stairs after surgery?

Yes, once your surgeon has cleared you for weight-bearing and stair climbing. We'll follow any specific precautions and progress at a safe pace.

Should I use a walking stick on stairs?

It depends. If you use a stick for walking, we'll teach you the safest way to use it on stairs. Sometimes it's safer to use the handrail instead. We'll assess what's best for you.
