About Steve's Tyne and Wear service

Steve McLaren is a chartered physiotherapist (MCSP) and HCPC registered practitioner providing home physiotherapy across Tyne and Wear. He lives in North Shields and has spent more than 20 of his nearly 30 years as a physiotherapist working in the community, treating people in their own homes. Most of his work is with older adults: falls and balance, getting back on your feet after an illness or a spell in hospital, stroke and other neurological conditions, and recovery after a joint replacement or a fracture.

Steve qualified from the University of East London in 1997 and has worked in the NHS in Leicester, London, Bristol and Gloucestershire, as well as in private rehabilitation in London and Sydney. In London he led the team that set up a new community service designed to keep people out of hospital and get them home sooner.

Since 2015 he has worked in the NHS in Newcastle, splitting his time between a rapid response and rehabilitation team, which treats frail older people at home when something has gone wrong, and the emergency department, where he picks out older people who can be safely helped at home rather than admitted. Falls prevention is his particular interest: he has run balance classes, including Tai Chi, and measured how well they work. Steve assesses and diagnoses directly, so there is no waiting for a GP referral before treatment can start.
