Physiotherapy for Shoulder Pain at Home in Buckinghamshire
Published
Local Physiotherapist — Hayley Netley, Buckinghamshire
Shoulder problems are stubborn. They disturb your sleep, they make dressing and reaching awkward, and they rarely settle on their own with rest. The good news is that most shoulder pain responds well to an accurate diagnosis and the right, well-progressed exercise — and that can be delivered in your own home across Buckinghamshire.

Why shoulders are worth getting properly assessed
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, and that mobility comes at the cost of stability. Pain in the same spot can come from the rotator cuff tendons, the joint capsule, the shoulder blade's control and rhythm, the neck, or a combination — and each of those needs a different plan. Two people with identical pain maps can need almost opposite programmes, which is why generic shoulder exercises from the internet so often disappoint.
Common shoulder problems Hayley sees
- Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis): painful, progressive stiffness that follows a long but predictable course; the right input at the right stage makes a real difference
- Rotator cuff related shoulder pain: pain reaching, lifting or lying on the shoulder, usually very responsive to a graded loading programme
- Shoulder impingement and bursitis: pinching pain in the mid-range of lifting the arm
- Shoulder instability: a shoulder that feels loose, slips or has dislocated, where control work matters more than strength alone
- After shoulder surgery: rotator cuff repair, subacromial decompression, stabilisation or shoulder replacement, following your surgeon's protocol
- Neck-related shoulder pain: pain referred from the neck that will not settle until the neck is addressed — see our guide to back and neck pain in Buckinghamshire
Specialist shoulder experience
Hayley spent a year in upper limb orthopaedics at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, one of the UK's leading orthopaedic centres, working with both inpatients and outpatients after complex shoulder surgery. She has completed extensive postgraduate shoulder training, including work on shoulder instability and functional shoulder rehabilitation, and has shadowed specialist shoulder clinicians to keep that expertise current. That background matters most when a shoulder is not following the textbook.
What a home shoulder assessment involves
- History: how it started, what makes it worse, how it affects sleep, work and daily tasks
- Movement testing: looking at the shoulder, shoulder blade and neck together to work out what is actually driving the pain
- An explanation you can use: a clear answer to "what is wrong and how long will it take"
- A starting programme: a small number of exercises that fit into your day, using what you already have at home
- Hands-on treatment where it genuinely helps, alongside the exercise rather than instead of it
Why home visits work well for shoulders
Shoulder rehabilitation is a marathon rather than a sprint, and the exercises have to fit real life to actually get done. Seeing your kitchen worktop, your bed, the shelf you cannot reach and the door you struggle to close means the programme is built around the tasks you actually want back. If you are recovering from surgery, in a sling, or unable to drive, a home visit removes the biggest practical barrier to starting rehabilitation on time.

Frequently asked questions
How long does frozen shoulder take to get better?
Frozen shoulder typically runs over many months and moves through a painful phase, a stiff phase and a thawing phase. Physiotherapy is aimed at controlling pain and protecting movement in the early stages, then restoring range and strength as the shoulder allows. Hayley will explain which stage you are in and set realistic expectations at your first visit.
Do I need a scan before starting physiotherapy for shoulder pain?
Usually not. Most shoulder pain can be assessed and treated without imaging, and scans often show changes that are not the cause of the pain. If your assessment suggests a scan or an onward referral would change the plan, Hayley will say so and advise you on the next step.
Can I have physiotherapy at home after shoulder surgery?
Yes. Home visits are well suited to the early weeks after shoulder surgery, when driving is not possible and your rehabilitation needs to follow the surgeon's protocol closely. Please have your operation notes or discharge letter available at the first appointment.
