Persistent pain — pain that lasts beyond normal healing time — is common, and it does not mean you are stuck. A modern, evidence-based physiotherapy approach can help you understand your pain, move with more confidence, and get back to the things that matter.

Understanding persistent pain

Persistent (or chronic) pain works differently from short-term injury pain. Over time the nervous system can become more sensitive, so pain can persist even when tissues have healed. This is real, common, and importantly — changeable. Understanding how pain works is often the first step towards managing it well.

A person-centred, biopsychosocial approach

Persistent pain covers conditions such as persistent low back pain, fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome, arthritis and pain after failed or multiple surgeries. A good approach recognises that pain is influenced by many factors — physical, lifestyle, sleep, stress and previous experiences — and builds a plan around the whole person, not just the painful area.

What home pain rehabilitation may involve

  • Education: understanding your pain and what helps it — a powerful treatment in itself
  • Graded movement and exercise: building activity back up at a pace that works for you
  • Coaching and goal-setting: focusing on the things you want to get back to
  • Hands-on treatment where helpful: to support movement and reduce short-term pain
  • Confidence and self-efficacy: giving you tools to manage flare-ups and stay on track

Why home visits help

For people living with persistent pain, travelling to appointments can be a real barrier. Working at home means building your programme around your actual daily life — your chair, your stairs, your garden — and practising in the environment where it matters.

Working alongside other care

Home physiotherapy works well alongside GP, consultant and NHS pain-service input. Your physiotherapist will always be honest about what physiotherapy can and cannot offer, and will suggest onward referral where that would help.
