Knee Pain Physiotherapy in Leeds: A Complete Home-Visit Guide

Local Physiotherapist — Parth Chauhan, Leeds
Knee pain is one of the most common reasons people in Leeds call me — from runners on Woodhouse Moor and the Leeds Country Way, to 60-somethings with early arthritis, to post-op patients discharged from LGI or Spire Leeds. Almost all of it is treatable without surgery, and a good home-based plan can make the difference between coping and actually recovering.
Common causes of knee pain I see in Leeds
- Patellofemoral pain (runner's knee) — pain at the front of the knee, worse going down hills (Kirkstall towards the Abbey, Headingley Hill) or down stairs.
- Knee osteoarthritis — stiffness in the morning, pain after activity, often in 50s–70s age range.
- Meniscal injuries — often after a twisting incident at Headingley rugby, five-a-side at Goals, or gardening.
- ITB (iliotibial band) syndrome — a runner's classic, lateral knee pain.
- Patellar tendinopathy ("jumper's knee") — common in netball, basketball, and jumping sports.
- Post-surgery knee pain — after arthroscopy, ACL reconstruction or total knee replacement.
Why home physiotherapy works for knee pain
- Stair access matters. I assess your actual stairs, not a prop.
- Post-op practicality. Driving after a knee operation is usually off for weeks.
- Real-world progression. Exercises are calibrated to your Leeds routine — the walk to the shops, parkrun on Saturday, the Leeds Half in May.
What I do on a home assessment
- Detailed history and activity profile.
- Objective knee tests — range, swelling, ligament stability, meniscal tests, patellar tracking.
- Hip, ankle and foot screening — knee pain is often driven from above or below.
- Gait and stair analysis.
- A targeted programme (2–3 exercises, not 20).
Evidence-based treatment
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment typically combines:
- Progressive loading — the single most reliable long-term tool for tendon and arthritic knee pain.
- Hip and glute strengthening — knee pain is very often a hip/core issue.
- Manual therapy for stiffness and swelling management.
- Neuromuscular retraining — squat, lunge, step-down mechanics.
- Return-to-activity planning — couch-to-parkrun, golf at Moor Allerton, back to Leeds Beckett gym.
