Falls Prevention for Older Adults in Leeds: Home Physiotherapy
Published
Local Physiotherapist — Parth Chauhan, Leeds
Falls are one of the leading causes of serious injury in people over 65 in Leeds. But a fall isn't an inevitability — it's a signal that something about strength, balance, vision, medication, or the home environment needs attention. A structured home physiotherapy programme can cut fall risk meaningfully, restore confidence, and keep people living independently.
Why falls happen — and why they're preventable
Most falls involve a combination of factors:
- Reduced strength — especially in the legs and hips.
- Poor balance and reaction time.
- Slower gait and shorter steps.
- Vision and hearing changes.
- Medications (sedatives, blood pressure tablets, some antidepressants).
- Home hazards — rugs, poor lighting, cluttered hallways, awkward stair rails.
- Footwear — slippers without backs, worn soles, loose fitting.
- Fear of falling — which reduces activity, which reduces strength, which increases fall risk. A vicious cycle.
What a home falls assessment looks like
In a first visit (up to 60 minutes, £80) I'll:
- Take a full history including any previous falls, near-misses, and medications.
- Run evidence-based balance and strength tests — Timed Up and Go, chair stands, Berg, or similar depending on ability.
- Walk through your home with you — stairs, bathroom, kitchen, bedroom — flagging hazards.
- Review footwear, walking aids and lighting.
- Build a personalised plan with 3–4 achievable exercises to start.
The exercise programme that actually works
Research is clear: the most effective falls-prevention programmes include strength and balance training, performed at least twice a week for several months. I base Leeds programmes on the Otago and FaME models, adapted to your ability and space.
Typical elements:
- Sit-to-stand practice (strength plus confidence).
- Heel raises and toe raises.
- Single-leg standing with support.
- Tandem (heel-to-toe) standing and walking.
- Step-ups with a bannister for support.
- Functional practice — reaching, turning, carrying.
Home-environment quick wins
- Remove loose rugs or secure with non-slip backing.
- Fit motion-sensor night lights on the landing and bathroom route.
- Check stair rails are secure on both sides.
- Replace slippers without backs with well-fitting shoes or proper slippers.
- Use a grab rail by the toilet or bath if needed.
